SUNY Cortland quarterback
Alex Smith (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) has been selected to the D3football.com national “Team of the Week,” presented by Scoutware, for the week ending Nov. 8. The team consists of the best performers by position among all Division III schools during the week.
Smith completed 22-of-33 passes for a career-high 324 yards in Cortland's 56-42 victory at Brockport. His four touchdown passes (80, 29, 24 and 5 yards) is one shy of the school single-game record, which he already shares.
Since taking over Cortland's starting quarterback role, Smith has led the Red Dragons to four straight victories. He is 50-of-87 passing for 635 yards and seven touchdowns. A graduate student who played from 2004-06, plus one game in 2007, Smith served as a coach last fall and this season before returning to the active roster in mid-season. He suffered season-ending injuries in both 2006 and 2007, and received an NCAA waiver to use his final year of eligibility this year. Smith currently ranks third at Cortland with 42 career TD passes and fourth in career completions (405) and passing yards (5,055).
