ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Andrew Cohn went 3-for-4 with a grand slam and seven RBI as Emory University defeated nationally 17th-ranked Cortland, 18-7, during the second day of competition at the North Carolina Wesleyan Coldwell Banker Tournament of Champions. Cortland (1-1) will complete play in the tournament Sunday at 11 a.m. versus North Carolina Wesleyan.
Senior
Steve Nickel (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) went 2-for-4 with two triples, a walk and four RBI to lead the Red Dragons. Senior
Khyle Dimino (Brighton) finished 2-for-4 with a homer.
Kevin O'Connor and Patrick Riebsame each finished with two hits and two RBI for Emory. Riebsame also drew three walks. Brian Cournoyer earned the win in relief, allowing no runs on two hits and two walks and striking out three in four and one-third innings.
Cortland took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Nickel two-run triple, but the Eagles answered with four runs in the first and three in the second off Red Dragon starter
Mike Assmann (Auburn). Cohn hit a two-run single in the first and an RBI double in the second.
The Red Dragons closed to within 7-6 with a four-run third that featured a Dimino solo homer, Nickel's two-run triple and a
Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) RBI single. Leading 8-6, Emory broke open the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. O'Connor singled in a run, Riebsame drew a bases-loaded walk two batters later and Cohn hit a grand slam to left.
The Eagles added a run in the seventh on a Dan Molnar RBI single and three in the eighth, including a Mark Mazur RBI double. Cortland's final run came on a pinch-hit RBI single by junior
Kris Gentzke (Clarence Center/Clarence) in the top of the eighth.
Cortland used seven pitchers in the game, each of whom threw an inning and two-thirds or less. The Red Dragon staff issued 14 walks and struck out eight batters.
