Jessica Laing (Bloomville/South Kortright) scored 29 points and became the all-time leading scorer in the 27-year history of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women's basketball as the Red Dragons defeated Oswego, 90-45.
Laing has scored 1,981 career points, eclipsing the previous SUNYAC record of 1,971 by Geneseo's Katie Smith from 1991-95. Laing broke the record with her 20th point of the game on a free throw with 15 minutes, six seconds left in the game.
Laing also finished with 14 rebounds for her 16th double-double of the season. Sophomore
Micki Volpini (Newfield) matched her career high with 25 points for the league-leading Red Dragons (17-3, 12-1 SUNYAC), who have won 12 straight games. Senior
Miranda Lustig (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) recorded a career-high 10 assists.
Rachel Kohrs (New Lebanon) led Oswego (10-10, 7-6 SUNYAC) with nine points. Kayla Ryan (Schaghticoke/Hoosick Valley) scored seven points and added three steals.
Cortland held only a 16-14 lead with 8:54 left in the first half after a Kohrs jumper, but the Red Dragons went on a decisive 17-0 run over the next 5:39. Laing scored seven points and Volpini had six points in that stretch. Laing scored 14 points and Volpini scored 12 points by intermission as Cortland led 36-21 at halftime. Oswego was no closer than 14 points in the second half.
Laing made 9-of-13 shots from the field and 10-of-12 free throws. Volpini finished 10-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line. She also had four steals and five rebounds. Cortland finished the game 54 percent from the field and 83 percent (25-of-30) from the foul line while holding Oswego to 27 percent shooting from the floor.
