Cortland Shut Down by Transylvania, 5-0

Michael Mahay struck out five batters in seven innings
AUBURNDALE, FLA. – Chris Bloch threw a five-hit shutout as Transylvania University of Kentucky defeated nationally 20th-ranked Cortland, 5-0, in a non-league matchup. The Pioneers improved to 10-3 with the victory and the Red Dragons are now 8-5.

Bloch struck out four and walked one for his first victory of the season. Ben Kuebbing went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI and Evan Rhea hit a solo homer.

Senior Khyle Dimino (Brighton) was 2-for-3 with a stolen base and junior Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) finished 2-for-4 with a double for Cortland. Junior Michael Mahay (Whitesboro) took the loss after allowing seven hits and two walks in seven innings. He struck out five and gave up four runs.

Rhea started the scoring with a solo homer to lead off the top of the second. With one out, Kuebbing doubled and Pete Travisano hit an RBI single and the Pioneers led 2-0.

That score held until a two-run eighth inning. Phil Blakely singled and Ben Young doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Cortland reliever Tyler Forger (Clayton/Thousand Islands) intentionally walked Drew Zuckerman to load the bases, then struck out the next two batters before allowing a Kuebbing two-run double. Transylvania's final run came on an Adam Clark RBI single in the ninth.

Cortland's best scoring threat was in the fourth inning. Bloch retired the first 10 Red Dragons before Kris Gentzke (Clarence Center/Clarence) singled with one out in the fourth. Simone doubled Gentzke to third, but Bloch recorded a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.

Cortland completes its Florida trip Saturday at 10 a.m. versus 21st-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater.
