AUBURNDALE, FLA. – Cortland's offense exploded for 21 hits as the nationally 20th-ranked Red Dragons completed their Florida trip with a 17-9 victory over 21st-ranked and previously unbeaten Wisconsin-Whitewater.
The Red Dragons finished 4-3 during their seven-day trip to the Sunshine State and are now 9-5 overall. The Warhawks fall to 5-1 with the loss.
Senior
Andersen Gardner (Fairport) finished 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored and senior
Khyle Dimino (Brighton) was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two steals. Junior
Justin Fredenburg (Saugerties) went 3-for-4 with a homer, double, walk, five RBI and three runs scored and junior
Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) was 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs.
Two other Red Dragons recorded multiple-hit games. Senior
Damon Arnold (Wellsville) went 2-for-5 with a double, walk, RBI and two runs and sophomore
Matt June (Colonie) was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs.
Matt Beyer led Whitewater by going 3-for-5 with a homer, three RBI and two runs. Nick Rechlitz was 2-for-3 and Mike Kenseth finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Cortland starter
Mike Assmann (Auburn) earned the win despite allowing nine hits and six runs over seven innings. He struck out five and walked three. Assmann went 2-0 in Florida and is 3-1 on the season. Aaron Leitner was tagged with the loss after giving up 12 hits and seven runs over five innings.
Cortland scored three runs in the top of the second, but Beyer's three-run homer fueled a four-run bottom of the inning for Whitewater. Cortland took the lead for good with two runs in the third. Simone's RBI single tied the game and Gardner singled in the go-ahead run.
The Red Dragons added two runs in the fifth and broke the game open by sending 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run sixth inning. Whitewater picked up two runs in the seventh to pull within 14-6, but Fredenburg homered in a three-run eighth inning for Cortland.
