Assmann Shutout Completes Twinbill Sweep vs. Mt. St. Vincent

Mike Assmann struck out eight batters and allowed only three hits and two walks over seven innings
YAPHANK, N.Y. – Junior Mike Assmann (Auburn) pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout and junior Kris Gentzke (Clarence Center/Clarence) hit a three-run homer as nationally 18th-ranked Cortland defeated the College of Mount St. Vincent, 4-0, to complete a doubleheader sweep versus the Dolphins. Cortland won the opener, 9-5, as senior Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

In the second of the two seven-inning contests, Assmann struck out eight batters and walked two to even his record at 1-1 on the season. Junior Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) hit an RBI triple to give the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth and Gentzke's three-run round-tripper extended the lead to 4-0 in the fifth.

Matt Calandrillo suffered the loss for Mt. St. Vincent, allowing seven hits and four runs over six innings. He fanned eight batters and walked one. John McManus went 2-for-3 to account for two of the Dolphins' three hits off Assmann.

In the opener, junior Michael Mahay (Whitesboro) earned the win for Cortland in relief of junior starter Scott Hartling (Pleasant Valley/Arlington). Hartling allowed five hits and five runs over three and two-third innings. He struck out four and walked one. Mahay tossed an inning and two thirds and gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out one. Gentzke pitched a third of an inning and senior Ed Southworth (Cortland) pitched the final inning and one third for his first save. Southworth entered the game with the Red Dragons up 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth and did not allow a run despite giving up a hit and two walks.

Cortland grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on a Jackson two-run single and added two more in the third on solo homers by senior Steve Nickel (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) and Adam Dimino (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima).

The Dolphins took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the third. The big blow in the inning was a three-run homer by Mike Ruckdaschel, who finished the game 2-for-4. In the fourth inning, Cortland scored once on a throwing error when Nickel stole second base with runners on first and third, and added another run in the inning on a Dimino RBI single. Dimino finished 2-for-2 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, two RBI, two steals and two runs scored.

Cortland added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a Jackson RBI single, a balk that scored Dimino and a pinch-hit RBI single by Alex Coffey (Hilton).

Anthony Mongelli pitched six innings and took the loss for Mt. St. Vincent. He gave up seven hits and seven runs, struck out six and walked four.
