Simone, Nickel Lead Cortland Past Farmingdale, 16-5; Joe Brown Becomes Red Dragon Career Win Leader

Jason Simone finished 4-for-5 with six runs batted in, including a three-run triple
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Junior Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) and senior Steve Nickel (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) combined for seven hits and 10 runs batted in as nationally 18th-ranked Cortland routed host Farmingdale State, 16-5, in a non-league matchup. Cortland improves to 5-2 with the victory, while the defending regional champion Rams are now 4-10.

With the victory, 11th-year head coach Joe Brown became Cortland's all-time win leader. He has a career record of 367-107-1, eclipsing the 366 victories by Robert “Sparky” Wallace from 1958-83.

Simone finished 4-for-5 with a triple and six RBI and Nickel went 3-for-4 with a homer, four RBI and three runs scored. Senior Adam Dimino (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) was 2-for-2 with a triple and four runs scored, senior Khyle Dimino (Brighton) finished 2-for-3 and sophomore Matt June (Colonie) was 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Junior Travis Ratliff (Levittown/Division Avenue) improved to 2-0 with the victory. He allowed five hits and three runs, two earned, in five and two-third innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Vinny Messana took the loss for Farmingdale after allowing seven hits and five runs, four earned, in two innings. Nick Wiwczar went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Cortland scored all 16 of its runs over the first six innings. Nickel and Simone hit RBI singles in a two-run first inning. In the third, Adam Dimino tripled and Nickel hit a two-run homer down the right field line. Simone singled and eventually scored on a Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) RBI double.

Simone's three-run triple and a John Zilnicki (Riverhead) RBI triple highlighted a four-run fourth inning. Cortland's five-run fifth inning featured RBI singles by Adam Dimino, Nickel, Simone and Justin Fredenburg (Saugerties), and Simone drove in a run on a fielder's choice during a two-run sixth.
