CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) singled in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh and Cortland scored five runs to break the game open in the bottom of the eighth as the nationally 21st-ranked Red Dragons defeated Brockport, 11-6, in the first game of a SUNYAC doubleheader.

The Red Dragons (19-6, 4-0 SUNYAC) completed the sweep with a 13-4 victory in the nightcap after scoring 11 runs over the first three innings.

The opener was a back-and-forth affair that featured five lead changes. Brockport (12-9, 2-3 SUNYAC) took an early 2-0 lead in the first on a two-out rally that featured two singles, a walk and a Tom McCormick (Utica/Utica Notre Dame) two-run single. Cortland put up three runs in the bottom of the second on an Andersen Gardner (Fairport) RBI triple, a Khyle Dimino (Brighton) run-scoring double and, three batters later, a Damon Arnold (Wellsville) RBI single.

Brockport tied the game in the fourth on Max Keado's (Troy/CCHS) RBI single and grabbed a 4-3 lead in the fifth on Joe Zaccardo's (Webster/Webster Thomas) RBI double. Cortland regained the lead in the sixth on Matt June's (Colonie) two-run single.

The Golden Eagles, however, answered with a pair of runs in the seventh. McCormick's infield single drove in the tying run and a Stephen Boronczyk (Syracuse/Corcoran) run-scoring groundout two batters later gave Brockport the lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Dimino singled with two outs, stole second and scored on Jackson's single to short left center.

Cortland's winning rally in the eighth started when June walked and kept going to second on a wild pitch. Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) singled with one out to drive in June with the go-ahead run. Adam Dimino (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) then singled, Gardner hit a two-run triple and Khyle Dimino tripled in Gardner. An error on the next play allowed the final run.

Senior Ed Southworth (Cortland), the Red Dragons' fifth pitcher, earned the victory. He gave up just one hit and struck out four in an inning and two-thirds. Khyle Dimino finished 3-for-4 wth a walk, two RBI and four runs scored, Adam Dimino was 3-for-5, Gardner went 2-for-4 with three RBI and June was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI as part of a 16-hit attack. McCormick finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and Zaccardo was 2-for-4 with a walk and RBI for Brockport.

In the second game, Cortland batted around in both a six-run first inning and five-run third inning. Senior John Zilnicki (Riverhead) went 2-for-2 with a homer, two walks, two RBI and three runs scored, Simone was 3-for-4 and June finished 3-for-5 with two RBI. Gardner homered and walked in three plate appearances and drove in three runs.

Mike Assmann (Auburn) pitched six innings for the win and is 5-2 on the season. He scattered 10 hits, walked two, struck out three and gave up three runs, all unearned.

Khyle Dimino's two-run double, Justin Fredenburg's (Saugerties) RBI single and Zilnicki's two-run homer capped the six-run first. Gardner homered to lead off the third and also drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning.

Zaccardo and Max Zimmerman (East Amherst/Williamsville North) each finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and Keado was 2-for-3 with a walk for the Golden Eagles.
