CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Adam Brown (Rochester/Greece Athena) tossed the 17th no-hitter in SUNY Cortland baseball history as the Red Dragons defeated visiting Cazenovia, 14-0, in the opening game of a doubleheader. Cortland (15-5), ranked 13th nationally by the American Baseball Coaches Association and 22nd by D3baseball.com, completed the sweep with a 2-0 victory on a two-run, third-inning homer by senior
Adam Dimino (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima).
Brown faced the minimum 21 batters in the seven-inning opener while registering Cortland's first no-hitter since
Matt Tone at Oswego in 2008. Brown issued a one-out walk to Dan Wood (Oneonta) in the top of the second, but got the next batter to hit into a 1-6-3 double play. Brown then retired the side in order over the final five innings. He finished with seven strikeouts and is now 4-1 on the season.
Senior
Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) went 4-for-4 with a double, walk and four RBI to lead a 14-hit Red Dragon attack. Junior
Kris Gentzke (Clarence Center/Clarence) finished 2-for-4 with a walk and three RBI and senior
Steve Nickel (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) was 2-for-2 with a walk, hit-by-pitch, RBI and three runs scored.
Junior
Billy Ribeiro (Congers/Nyack) hit a three-run homer during a six-run fifth inning. Senior
Khyle Dimino (Brighton) was 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
Cortland took a 3-0 lead in the first on Jackson's two-run single and Gentzke's RBI single.
Damon Arnold (Wellsville) drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the third and Jackson doubled in a run in the fourth. Nickel's RBI single, Gentzke's two-run single and Ribeiro's three-run homer plated the runs in the fifth. The Red Dragons added three in the sixth on
Andersen Gardner's (Fairport) two-run triple and Jackson's bad-hop RBI single.
In the second game, Cortland junior
Scott Hartling (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) outdueled Cazenovia freshman Joe Rogers (Broadalbin/Broadalbin-Perth). Hartling allowed three hits and one walk and struck out eight over seven innings for the shutout and his first win as a Red Dragon. He retired the final 13 batters he faced. Rogers also gave up only three hits and one walk and fanned five batters.
In the bottom of the third,
Shawn Bailey (Webster/Webster Schroeder) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and stole second with two outs.
Adam Dimino followed with a two-run homer to left center.
Both teams threatened in the first inning. The Wildcats (2-12) had runners on first and second with one out after singles by Colin Parry (Auburn) and Bryan Wilgocki (Schenectady/CBA), but Hartling struck out the next batter and got a fielder's choice to end the inning. Cortland used a one-out error and a Nickel single, with Nickel taking second on a throw, to put runners on second and third with one out, but Rogers struck out the next two hitters.
