CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland scored in every inning, including seven runs in both the fifth and seventh frames, and the nationally 12th-ranked Red Dragons defeated Hamilton College, 28-2, in a non-league game at Wallace Field.
Senior
Steve Nickel (Lake Ronkonkoma/Sachem North) and junior
Alex Coffey (Hilton) each homered and drove in four runs for the Red Dragons (28-7-1). Nickel hit a grand slam – his ninth homer of the season – in the fifth inning and finished 2-for-3 with a walk and hit-by-pitch. Coffey went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly off the bench.
Six other Red Dragons had multiple-hit games as part of a 24-hit attack. Senior
Adam Dimino (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while his brother
Khyle Dimino (Brighton) was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Senior

Andersen Gardner (Fairport) was 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI. Sophomore
Matt June (Colonie) hit a two-run single in the third to extend his hitting streak to 15 games and junior
Billy Ribeiro (Congers/Nyack) went 1-for-1 with two walks and an RBI in three plate appearances. Freshman Matt Wild (Auburn) reached base three times on a double, hit-by-pitch and walk and scored three times.
Sophomore
Brendan Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) earned the win after allowing four hits and two runs in three innings. He struck out four batters and walked none. Four freshman relievers allowed a combined five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings.
Rich Morris (Milton/Marlboro) and
Todd DeGroat (Walden/Valley Central) each tossed two innings, while
A.J. Valentino (West Islip) and
Matt Colbert (Dryden) pitched one inning apiece.
Wes Mayberry (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) was 2-for-3 with a double for Hamilton (8-23). Alex Augustyn (Hillsborough, CA/Crystal Springs Uplands) and Justin Atwood (Wellesley, MA) each finished 2-for-3.
