CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore
Matt June (Colonie) went 3-for-5, including a two-run homer that gave Cortland the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the nationally 12th-ranked Red Dragons edged St. John Fisher, 7-6, in non-league action.
Senior brothers
Adam Dimino (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and
Khyle Dimino (Brighton) also homered for the Red Dragons (29-7-1). Adam finished 2-for-4 with a hit-by-pitch and two RBI, Khyle went 1-for-3 with a walk and senior
Andersen Gardner (Fairport) was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. June doubled and singled in addition to his homer and extended his hitting streak to 16 straight games.
Junior
Kris Gentzke (Clarence Center/Clarence) earned the win in relief of starter
Michael Mahay (Whitesboro). Gentzke, the pitcher of record when June hit his homer, allowed two hits, two walks and two runs in two and two-third innings. Mahay was tagged for eight hits and three runs in four innings. Senior
Adam Brown (Rochester/Greece Athena), making his first relief appearance of the season, pitched two hitless and scoreless innings with one walk and two strikeouts for the save.
Ross Langevin (Liverpool) finished 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs for the visiting Cardinals (22-11). Kevin Wing (Webster/Webster Schroeder) was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Sean Osterman (Pittsford/Pittsford-Sutherland) was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Brandon Lewis (Addison)started for Fisher and gave up three runs on five hits over three innings. Adam Pettinella (Batavia) suffered the loss after allowing six hits and three runs in two and two-third innings.
Cortland led 1-0 in the first on a Gardner RBI single, but Wing's sacrifice fly in the second tied the score.
Adam Dimino hit a two-run homer in the third to give the Red Dragons a 3-1 advantage, but Osterman's RBI single cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth.
Khyle Dimino's solo homer to lead off the bottom of the fourth re-established a two-run Cortland lead. It appeared that the ball he hit may have actually bounced over the fence in straightaway center field, but after a discussion the umpires ruled it a homer.
Fisher scored a run in the fifth when Ben Bostick (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) legged out a bloop double to left center, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Jon Gibbs (Pittsford/Pittsford-Sutherland) groundout. The Cardinals took the lead in the sixth on an Osterman RBI groundout and a Wing RBI single to center.
In the bottom of the sixth, pinch hitter
Dan Kaplan (Penfield) singled with one out and stole second. With two outs and Kaplan on third, June hit an opposite-field fly ball to left field. Fisher left fielder Osterman almost made a leaping catch to rob June of the home run, but he wasn't able to complete the catch and the Red Dragons took the lead.
Cortland added an insurance run on
Jason Simone's (Utica/Thomas R. Proctor) RBI single in the seventh, and the Red Dragons needed that run when Fisher scored an unearned run in the eighth on an error, a walk, a wild pitch and a Wing RBI groundout. Brown, who issued the walk to start his appearance, induced a groundout after Wing's RBI to end the inning with a runner on third, then retired the side in order in the ninth.
