Red Dragons Wrap up Regular Season with 17-8 Win vs. Oneonta

Senior Brandon Misiaszek moved closer to 100 career points with his two goals and two assists
CORTLAND, N.Y. –  Senior Brian Krol (Niskayuna) scored a game-high five goals to lead the nationally fourth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team to a 17-8 win over Oneonta in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon. The host Red Dragons completed their regular season with a 13-2 overall record, including 6-0 in the conference, and will host Potsdam in a SUNYAC Semifinal game on Wednesday, May 5. The visiting Red Dragons fell to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the league and travel to Geneseo on Wednesday for a semifinal matchup.

Senior Brandon Misiaszek (New Hartford) contributed two goals and handed out two assists for Cortland. Juniors Neal Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) and Brian Donahue (Camillus/West Genesee) each scored twice. Senior Chris Dutkowsky (Vestal) had a goal and two assists, and junior Chris DeLuca (Sayville) recorded one goal and one assist.

Senior Tom Burke (Massapequa), juniors Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields) and Pat Hayes (Mastic/Eastport South Manor) and sophomore Eric Richards (Skaneateles) each added a goal. DeLuca won 7-of-9 faceoffs and junior Justin Battino (Plainview) won 11-of-15. Freshman goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) made six saves in earning the win in the cage.

Junior Ryan Waibel (West Islip) led the Oneonta offense with three goals. Senior Scott Weiner (Suffern) and freshman John DeOrdio (Chenango Forks) each contributed a goal and an assist. Juniors Tom Kelly (Lake Peekskill/Putnam Valley) and Brian Kollar (East Islip) and sophomore Mike Salerno (West Babylon) tallied one goal apiece. Junior Sean Reynolds (Bethpage) started in goal, stopping 14 shots and allowing 17 goals in 56 minutes, 24 seconds before giving way to sophomore Chris Miles (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius), who made one save over the final 3:36.

Burke and Hopps gave Cortland a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game with unassisted goals. Kelly made it 2-1 at 3:50, but the host Red Dragons ended the opening quarter with scores from Krol and DeLuca at 2:55 and six seconds, respectively, for a 4-1 lead. Cortland took control of the game by outscoring Oneonta, 5-0, in the second quarter for a 9-1 advantage, as Krol scored twice and Hayes, Dutkowsky and Hopps each netted one goal.

Kollar opened the scoring in the third quarter with an unassisted goal at 13:13, but Richards and Misiaszek answered with goals 72 seconds apart and Cortland led 11-2. Waibel then scored his first of the game at 8:03 and Weiner followed with a man-up goal at 3:51 to cut the lead to 11-4. Krol halted Oneonta's momentum with his fourth of the game at 2:52 and Misiaszek pushed Cortland's lead to 13-4 52 seconds later with a man-up goal. Each team found the back of the net four times in the fourth quarter, with Donahue connecting twice for Cortland and Waibel scoring his second and third goals for Oneonta. Salerno completed the scoring in the game at 45 seconds for the final of 17-8.
