Red Dragons Secure SUNYAC Regular-Season Title with 15-3 Win at Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – Thirteen different players scored goals as the nationally fifth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team defeated Geneseo, 15-3, in SUNYAC action Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference with the win, while the Knights fell to 6-6 and 3-2. Cortland clinched the conference regular-season title and will host a SUNYAC semifinal game on Wednesday, May 4.

Junior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) was the only Red Dragon player to register more than one goal in the game, scoring four points on three goals and one assist. Senior Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields) tallied a game-high five points on a goal and four assists, and juniors Zack Mulvaney (Deferiet/Carthage) and Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) and freshman Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) each contributed one goal and one assist. Freshman goalie Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) made 13 saves and allowed three goals in 54 minutes, 31 seconds. Sophomore Mike Kaminski (Sayville) stopped one shot over the final 5:29.

Brandon Kurpis had a goal and an assist for Geneseo, and Graig Lange and Ray Ryan netted one goal apiece. Jeff Watson recorded an assist. Ryan Zaremba registered 16 saves in 54:31, while Noah Berg turned aside one shot in 5:29.

Ryan gave the Knights their only lead of the game with an unassisted goal just 44 seconds into the opening quarter. Cortland then closed the first half with seven straight goals, two in the first quarter and five in the second, from seven different players to take a 7-1 lead into halftime. The Red Dragons outscored the Knights, 2-1, in the third quarter for a 9-2 advantage. In the fourth quarter, Tota scored three times as Cortland notched the final five goals of the game for the 15-3 final.
