Maddy Scozzie stands on the podium after winning a share of the national title on uneven bars at the NCGA Championships
La CROSSE, WIS. – Cortland junior
Maddy Scozzie (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) claimed a share of the national title on uneven bars during the individual event finals at the 2015 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Scozzie finished in a four-way tie for first on bars with a career-high 9.80. She shared the national crown with Samantha Wiekamp and Amy Enright of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Katie Fiorilli of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Scozzie earned Cortland's 16th women's gymnastics NCGA individual national title (17th overall), and she is the first Red Dragon to win a title on uneven bars since Sulekha Modi captured three crowns in 1997, 1998 and 2000.
Cortland earned four first-team All-America honors during the individual event finals. In addition to Scozzie on bars, sophomore
Amanda Scanlon (Glastonbury, CT) tied for fifth on both floor exercise (career-high tying 9.70) and balance beam (9.625), and senior
Elise Konikoff (Hamburg) finished fourth on balance beam (9.65). The top six finishers in each individual event are first-team All-Americans, with places 7-12 earning second-team honors.
Cortland also earned two All-America awards in the all-around during Friday's opening night of competition as Scozzie tied for fifth and Scanlon placed eighth. The top 10 all-around finishers are named first-team All-Americans.
Other Cortland individual event results Saturday were a 16th-place finish by Scanlon on vault (9.125) and 18th-place efforts by Konikoff on vault (9.025) and junior
Meghan Goyden (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) on floor exercise (8.65).
Scanlon now has four All-America awards to her credit. In addition to her three honors this season, she was a second-team honoree on beam last season. Scozzie is a three-time All-American with her two awards this year and an all-around honor last winter, while Konikoff picked up her second All-America award after tying for second on vault last season.
In addition, Cortland seniors Konikoff,
Allie Osmundsen (Hicksville) and
Nicole Zangoglia (Old Bridge, NJ) were recognized as NCGA Senior Scholar Athlete Award winners at the meet.
With Scozzie's uneven bars title, SUNY Cortland Athletics now boasts 100 individual national championships across all of its sports.
