DOYLESTOWN, PA. – The nationally 17th-ranked Cortland wrestling team won the first nine bouts and defeated Delaware Valley, 43-4, Friday night on the road. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 12-6 on the season, while the Aggies fell to 7-6.
Senior
Andrew Roden (Kings Park) started the night for Cortland with a 5-3 victory at 125 pounds in the second sudden-victory period. Junior
Maverick Passaro (Manorville/Eastport South Manor) followed with a 15-0 technical fall in 7:00 at 133 pounds to give Cortland an 8-0 lead.
The first of two Red Dragon upsets on the night occurred at 141 pounds as sophomore
Da'mani Burns (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) turned a first-period takedown into a pin in 1:49 against nationally third-ranked Tim Ambacher. Sophomore
Matt Caputo (Stony Point/North Rockland) then earned a win by injury default at 149 pounds before senior
Bobby Dierna (Webster/Wayne), the top-ranked wrestler and defending national champion at 157 pounds, recorded an 18-9 major decision to make the team score 24-0.
At 165 pounds, sophomore
Zack Zupan (Canastota/Canastota Central) registered a 9-1 major decision for the Red Dragons. Senior
Colin Barber (Westfield, NJ) followed with a pin in 2:07 at 174 pounds to raise his season record to 28-7. The second Cortland upset happened at 184 pounds when Cortland junior
Deuly Espinal (Brooklyn/Grand Street) knocked off fifth-ranked Ben Schweiger,4-3, who was wrestling up a weight.
Freshman
Kevin Morgans (Livingston Manor/Liberty) was awarded a forfeit victory at 197 pounds, and the Red Dragons led, 43-0. At 285 pounds, defending national champion and nationally top-ranked Zach Roseberry earned an 18-5 major decision to push his winning streak to 49 straight bouts.
The Red Dragons travel to Nassau Community College for a noon match on Saturday.
