J.P. Puca won 7-2 at 174 pounds to extend Cortland's lead to 19-12
UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The nationally 17th-ranked Cortland wrestling team won four straight matches to erase a 12-8 deficit and earn a 23-18 victory at Nassau Community College Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 13-6 with the win.
Cortland grabbed an early 8-0 lead on a 5-3 decision by
Erick Orellana (Brentwood) at 125 pounds and a 20-4 technical fall by
Josh Antoine (Brooklyn/Grand Street) at 133 pounds. Nassau responded with pins by Nick Casella at 141 and Sean Miller at 149 to take a 12-8 lead.
The Red Dragons tied the match with
Adrian Berry's (Uniondale) 8-0 major decision at 157, and
Brendan Dent's (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) 9-1 major decision at 165 put Cortland ahead 16-12. Cortland's lead grew to 23-12 when
J.P. Puca (Huntington) won 7-2 at 174 and former Nassau wrestler
Deuly Espinal (Brooklyn/Grand Street) won by a 15-2 major decision at 184.
Nassau finished the match with a pair of decisions to create the final five-point margin. Cedrick Stevens on 8-4 at 197 and Jonathan Solorzano won 3-2 in the second sudden-victory overtime period at 285 on a penalty point.
Cortland will wrestle at home for the first time this season in two weeks when the Red Dragons host Oswego and Hunter for dual matches on Saturday, Feb. 11, starting at noon.
