#17 Cortland Wrestlers Defeat Hunter and Oswego on Senior Day

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland, ranked 17th nationally in Division III, defeated Hunter College, 53-0, and Oswego, 39-6, as part of a tri-match wrestling event held at Corey Gymnasium. The Red Dragons improved to 15-6 on the season with the victories.

Cortland was at home for the first time this season and celebrated "Senior Day" prior the Oswego match, with seniors Colin Barber (Westfield, NJ), Nick Bellanza (East Northport), Chris Cataldo (Wantagh/MacArthur), Bobby Dierna (Webster/Wayne), Nicholas Lupi (Huntington), Brenden Nunziata (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) and Andrew Roden (Kings Park) recognized.

Cortland's victory over Hunter featured three pins, three technical falls and four forfeits. Roden pinned his opponent in 1:22 at 125 pounds, Matt Caputo (Stony Point/North Rockland) earned a pin in 32 seconds at 149 pounds, and Zack Zupan (Canastota) pinned his foe in 1:24 at 165 pounds. Dierna and Barber each recorded 21-4 technical falls at 157 and 174 pounds, respectively, and Deuly Espinal (Brooklyn/Grand Street) won by a 19-1 technical fall in just 2:22 at 184 pounds.

The Red Dragons' four forfeit wins were picked up by Maverick Passaro (Manoville/Eastport South Manor) at 133, Da'mani Burns (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) at 141, Bellanza at 197 and Zach Gifford (Deposit) at 285.

Cortland won eight out of 10 matches versus Oswego. Dierna earned a pin in 3:10 at 157, Zupan notched his second pin of the day in 2:15 at 165, and Bellanza recorded a pin in 5:32 at 197. Burns won by a 19-0 technical fall in just 1:52 at 141 and Espinal was a 17-0 technical fall winner in two minutes even at 184.

The Red Dragons started the match with a pair of major decisions. Roden won 15-3 at 125 and Passaro was an 11-0 winner at 133. Barber posted a 2-0 decision at 174 by virtue of a third-period escape point and a riding time point. Oswego's two victories were a 9-5 sudden-victory win by Joey Bush at 149 and a 3-1 win by Kade Andrews at 285.

In the day's opening match, Oswego (5-10) shut out Hunter, 53-0.

The Red Dragons' final home match will be versus Ithaca on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. as part of a "Beauty and the Beast" event with the women's gymnastics team.
