Cortland Celebrates Senior Day With 34-13 Win vs. Nassau CC

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland, behind a pin from Adrian Berry (Uniondale), a major decision by Mat Bradice (Mastic/William Floyd), two decisions and three forfeit wins, defeated visiting Nassau Community College, 34-13, on Senior Day. The Red Dragons improved to 9-6 in dual action this year. The Lions are now 9-8.

Cortland opened with a forfeit win by Josh Antoine (Brooklyn/Grand Street) at 125 pounds and Bradice's 15-4 major decision at 133 to take a 10-0 lead. Nassau cut the Red Dragon lead to 10-8 with a 5-3 decision by John Arceri at 141 and a 17-1 technical fall in 5:15 at 149 pounds by Chris Meloni.

Cortland bounced back with wins at the next two weight classes. Greg Chery (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) earned a 6-2 decision at 157 pounds for his team-high 24th win of the season, and Berry pinned his opponent in 2:11 at 165 pounds. Nassau's Michael Abidin won by a 23-4 tech fall in 4:57 at 174 pounds to pull the Lions within 19-13.

Cortland, however, won the next two matches by forfeit - Deuly Espinal (Brooklyn/Grand Street) at 184 pounds and Mike Beckwith (Greene) at 197 pounds. In the final match of the day, Cortland's Zach Gifford (Deposit) and Nassau's Jonathan Solorzano were tied at 1-1 through regulation. Neither scored in the first sudden victory overtime period. In the first tiebreaker round, Gifford started the opening 30 seconds on top and recorded a near fall to take a 3-1 lead. In the next 30-second segment of the tiebreaker, Solorzano was unable to score and Gifford earned the 3-1 victory.

Prior to the match, Cortland honored its eight seniors - Antoine, Beckwith, Berry, Bradice, Chery, Espinal, Travis Edwards (Sparrow Bush/Port Jervis) and Jarrod Mauge (New Rochelle) - along with senior team operational manager Ayana Flores and assistant coaches Deral Brown, Alexis Blanco and Andrew Roden, all in their final season with the program.
