III, scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and defeated Stevens Institute, 11-5, in the Red Dragons&rsquo; first game of a seven-game Florida spring break trip. Cortland is now 6-2 on the season while the Ducks fall to 4-5. 

Junior Mike Assmann (Auburn) allowed only four hits and three runs, two earned, over six innings for the win. He walked three batters and recorded 11 of Cortland&rsquo;s 16 strikeouts. Freshman Rich Morris (Milton/Marlboro), Cortland&rsquo;s third relief pitcher, earned a save with one and a third innings of hitless and scoreless innings. The Red Dragons finished the season-opening tournament with a 4-2 record. Cortland will be one of six teams competing at nationals March 26-27 at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass.

The top three teams at the seven-team ECAC meet qualify for nationals. Brockport repeated as ECAC champion with a score of 184.875. Cortland was a solid second with 184.10 and Springfield finished third at 182.775. The nationally sixth-ranked Red Dragons completed pool play with a 7-1 win over the Unversity of La Verne from California as Finch threw a six-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks. The Red Dragons fell to 1-2 with the loss, their second in five days to a top-five team, while the Gulls improved to 5-0.

Eight different players scored goals for Cortland with junior Chris DeLuca (Sayville) leading the way with two goals and an assist and senior Brian Krol (Niskayuna) scoring twice. DeLuca also won 7-of-9 faceoffs. Junior Pat Hayes (Mastic/Eastport South Manor) contributed a goal and two assists, and junior Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields) chipped in with one goal and one assist. Senior Brandon Misiaszek (New Hartford), junior Eric Parah (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and sophomores Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) and Eric Richards (Skaneateles) each added a goal. Sophomore Ryan Pericozzi (Lancaster) will compete in the pole vault Friday at 10 a.m. Senior Justin Wager (Guilderland) will compete in the mile run preliminaries Friday at 4 p.m., with the finals set for Saturday at 2 p.m. Junior Gino Bisceglia (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) runs in the preliminaries of the 400 meters Friday at 5:05 p.m., with the finals Saturday at 2:55 p.m. Bisceglia enters the meet with the top time in the nation this season at 48.64 seconds. Freshman Dash Ellis (Tomkins Cove/North Rockland) will compete in the triple jump Saturday at 3 p.m.

The meet will be held March 17-20 at the University of Minnesota, with Beloit College (Wis.) and The College of Wooster (Ohio) serving as co-hosts.

Evans has qualified to compete in both the 50-yard freestyle (March 17) and 100-yard freestyle (March 20). He will also swim in the 100-yard butterfly (March 18) since each qualifier is allowed to swim in three events. Evans enters the competition with the fifth-best time in the 100-yard freestyle (45.22) and is tied for ninth in the 50-yard freestyle (20.64). Houseman has qualified for the 100-yard breaststroke (March 19) and 200-yard breaststroke (March 20), and will also swim in the 200-yard individual medley (March 17). She's seeded sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.09) and 17th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.78).

III Wrestling Championships. Senior Martino Sottile (Brentwood) dropped a pair of bouts but still finished eighth at 197 pounds. Both Sterling and Sottile earned All-America honors with their finishes.

Cortland finished in 22nd place in the final team standings with 18.5 points. The Red Dragons have placed in the top 25 nationally eight times in the last nine seasons.

Cortland won the opener, 9-5, as senior Kevin Jackson (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

In the second of the two seven-inning contests, Assmann struck out eight batters and walked two to even his record at 1-1 on the season. Junior Jason Simone (Utica/Thomas R.
