J.C. Cardenas (Brooklyn/Grand Street Campus) has been selected as the Division III National Wrestler of the Week by the website d3wrestle.com.
Cardenas finished first at 133 pounds at the Ursinus College Racich Rumble this past Saturday. Seeded second, Cardenas finished 5-0 with three pins and a technical fall, including a pin in the finals versus nationally ranked Dalton Rohrbaugh of York College, who finished third nationally last season. Cardenas' performance helped Cortland place second out of 14 schools at the tournament.
Cardenas is 8-0 this season with six pins and a technical fall and in two seasons has a 25-5 career record. Cardenas is ranked fifth nationally in the initial National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III national rankings and first in the Mideast Region at 133 pounds. He was ranked ninth nationally at 133 in last week's D3wrestle.com rankings; the site's new rankings are due later Wednesday.
Cortland is ranked 25th in the latest NWCA Division III poll. The Red Dragons will compete at the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships Saturday at 9 a.m. at Oswego.
