Cortland Beats Plattsburgh, 6-1, to Secure SUNYAC Playoff Berth

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Cortland women's tennis team clinched a berth into next spring's SUNYAC postseason tournament with a 6-1 victory over Plattsburgh Friday at the Lane - Starke Tennis Center.

Cortland (6-3, 3-1 SUNYAC) is guaranteed no worse than third place in the final league standings with one match remaining. The Red Dragons face New Paltz Saturday at noon in Binghamton, and Cortland can place either first, second or third in the conference depending on that result along with other conference matches. The top four teams will play in the SUNYAC tournament, with an NCAA automatic berth on the line, next April in Binghamton.

Cortland grabbed a 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches. Christina Massoni (West Babylon) and Emma Madigan won 6-1 at first doubles and Preston Fuerbacher (Fairport) and JayLynn Robinson (Evans Mills/Indian River) won 6-4 at third doubles. Plattsburgh's Hallie Hurwitz and Kristy Cantwell edged Cortland's Mary Repass (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and Alexandra Thut (Poughquag/Arlington), 7-5, at second doubles.

The Red Dragons earned the victory with wins on five of the six singles flights. Massoni was a 6-4, 6-1 victor at number one and Madigan won 6-1, 6-1 at number three. Hannah Green (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win at number four and Gabriella Stanley (Buffalo/Niagara-Wheatfield) battled to a 6-4, 6-4 win at sixth singles.

Two singles matches were decided with 10-point super tiebreakers instead of a third set with the team outcome no longer in doubt. Cortland won at number five with Fuerbacher coming back for a 5-7, 6-4, 10-6 win over Cantwell, while Hurwitz earned the lone team point for the Cardinals (6-4, 1-3 SUNYAC) with a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 win over Repass.
