ALFRED, N.Y. - The Cortland women's tennis team concluded its fall regular-season schedule with a 4-3 dual-match loss at Alfred University.
Â
The match was played with a modified scoring system due to the fact that Alfred had only four courts. After Cortland won the team doubles point, the first four singles flights were played. Two of those matches were heading to a third set when it was decided that a 10-point super tiebreaker would be played instead. That system is usually used only when the team outcome has already been decided, but in this case was used early to free up the courts for fifth and sixth singles. Alfred won both of those matches.
Â
Cortland won two of three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead.
Lisa Schulz (Mönchengladbach, Germany) and
Christina Massoni (West Babylon) cruised to a 6-0 win at first doubles and
Gabriella Stanley (Buffalo/Niagara-Wheatfield) and
Alexandra Thut (Poughquag/Arlington) won 6-3 at second doubles. Alfred's Becca Epping and Anastasia Shaw won 6-3 at third doubles.
Â
The Red Dragons led 3-2 after the first four singles matches. Epping won at fourth singles over Thut, 4-6, 6-1, 10-3, and Stanley won at third singles, 6-0, 6-0. At second singles, Elizabeth Madsen squeaked past Massoni, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 10-8, and Schulz won at first singles, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
Â
Alfred won the final two matches to earn the team victory. Alexis Gits won 6-4, 6-1 at number six singles to tie the score, and Allison Windisch clinched the win with a tight 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) win over
Mary Repass (Honeoye Falls/Honeoye Falls-Lima) at fifth singles.
Â
Cortland returns to action next Friday at 4 p.m. versus Oswego in the SUNYAC Tournament semifinals in Binghamton.
