WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – The Cortland women's golf team finished in 34th place at the NCAA Division III Championships, held at the Kingsmill Resort. The Red Dragons finished with a score of 361 on Tuesday on the resort's Plantation Course and improved to a score of 335 on the River Course Wednesday (and a few holes on Thursday) for a two-day total of 696.
Only 15 schools made the cut, along with six individuals not on those 15 teams, to continue playing in the final two rounds.
The tournament opened Tuesday and Cortland's players were still on the front nine when play was halted for nearly five hours due to rain. The Red Dragons were able to finish their rounds that day, but some other teams did not. The first round concluded Wednesday, but the second round was then halted at around 4 p.m. due to electrical storms. Four of Cortland's five players had to play up to three holes on Thursday to complete their second round.
Cortland's first-round score of 361 ranked 34th in the field, and their second-round score of 335 was 29th best.
Senior
Sophie Oristian (North Potomac, MD/Quince Orchard) was Cortland's top performer with a two-day score of 165. She was even par through six holes Tuesday before the rain delay and finished with an 84, and she recorded an 81 in the second round, which included a par and birdie on Thursday to close out her halted second round.
Freshman
Gina Milazzo (Greenwood Lake/Warwick Valley) recorded an 89 on Tuesday. She played 15 holes Wednesday before the stoppage and played three holes Thursday to finish with an 83 in the second round and a two-round total of 172.
Sophomore
Pia Aguilar (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Highlands) finished with a two-round score of 179. She had a 96 on Tuesday and improve to an 83 on Wednesday, plus two holes on Thursday. Sophomore
Mimi Rienzo (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) scored a 92 Tuesday and an 88 on Wednesday, plus one hole Thursday, to end with a 180. Junior
Kara Dumas (Jefferson/Gilboa-Conesville) finished with a 98 Tuesday and a 108 Wednesday for a final total of 206.
Cortland was making its third NCAA appearance in the last four years. The Red Dragons earned an automatic berth into the national field after winning the Northeast Women's Golf Conference (NWGC) title in late April.
