WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS. –
Culley Bellino (Canastota) won the 141-pound weight class and was one of six Cortland wrestlers to earn top-five finishes at the Williams College Open on Saturday. There was no team scoring.
Bellino finished 4-0 at 141 pounds, with each of the four wins by pin in less than two minutes. He pinned a pair of unattached wrestlers from Springfield College in the final two rounds, winning in 43 seconds versus Eddie Lavoie in the semifinals and in 1:13 against Ryan Kozdra in the finals. Bellino is 15-8 with 13 pins this season.
Colton Havens (Canisteo/Canisteo-Greenwood) placed third at 157 pounds with a 3-1 record. He opened with a pair of technical falls before losing in the semifinals, but he bounced back to register an 11-2 major decision in the third-place match. Havens improved to 20-4 on the season.
Luke Chernaski (Merrick/Kellenberg Memorial) and
Nicholas Rose (Lindenhurst) each posted fourth-place finishes. Chernaski was 2-2 with two pins at 174 pounds and Rose finished 2-2 with a pin at 197 pounds.
Two other Red Dragons earned fifth-place showings.
Justin Klein (Miller Place) went 3-1 with two pins at 165 pounds and
Joseph Visciano (Smithtown/Smithtown East) went 3-1 with three pins at 174 pounds. Both wrestlers had a "no contest" in their respective fifth-place matches.
Cortland will compete next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 9-10, at the Budd Whitehill National Duals, hosted by Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa.
