Sbrocca's First Collegiate Goal Lifts Cortland to 3-1 Win Over Manhattanville

CORTLAND, NY – Genevieve Sbrocca (Fort Worth, TX/The Hill School Prep) netted her first collegiate goal for the game winner midway through the third period, and the Cortland women's hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over Manhattanville in non-conference action on Friday afternoon in Alumni Arena. Cortland improves to 6-5-2 with the victory, while Manhattanville drops to 2-8-1.

In addition to Sbrocca's goal, Fanny Aneborn (Linkoping, Sweden/Lulea HF Sweden) and Katie Diem (Fairport/Niagara University) each tallied a goal apiece. Katie Mahoney (Toronto, ON/Toronto Leaside Junior) provided two assists, and Eline Gillodes (La Saulce, France/Kents Hill) stopped 18 shots in goal for the Red Dragons.

Olivia Cimorelli made 44 saves in goal for the Valiants, while Jada Mackinnon provided the lone goal for Manhattanville.

Cortland went on the power play just four minutes into the first period, but the Red Dragons were unable to capitalize with the extra skater, as Cimorelli turned aside four shots for the Valiants.

The Red Dragons continued to control possession through most of the opening frame, holding a 11-5 edge in shots on goal in the period. However, the game remained scoreless into the first intermission.

Cortland took the lead early in the second period, as Diem redirected a shot from the left point by Ainsley Delacourt (Stoney Creek, ON/Brampton Canadettes U22AA) past Cimorelli, with Mahoney providing the secondary assist on the goal.

Manhattanville was able to net the equalizing goal against the run of play with just over five minutes left in the second period, as Mackinnon knocked a shot from in front of goal after a feed from the right side along the boards from Molly Sances.

Cortland held a significant 34-9 lead in shots on goal through two periods, but Cimorelli continued to play well to keep the guests even into the intermission.

The Red Dragons went up for good with 10:01 remaining in the third period. After a shot from the right point by Ella Iwinski (Batavia, IL/New England College) was off target, Kayla Persinger (Youngstown/Newark Ironbound 19UAAA) collected the puck along the boards to the left. Persinger skated down towards the goal line, and fired a quick shot that was deflected by Sbrocca in front and over the shoulder of Cimorelli into the top right corner of the net.

Cortland added an insurance goal with under five minutes left, as Mahoney stickhandled through a pair of Manhattanville defenders, before feeding Aneborn to the left of the goal for a shot into the roof of the net to make it 3-1. Carlen Bertrand (Timmins, ON/MCLA) provided the secondary assist on the goal for the Red Dragons.

With just over three minutes remaining in the third period, Gillodes made one of her best saves of the game to deny a shot by Catrina Chinetti on a 2-on-1 break for the Valiants.

Cortland committed a slashing penalty with 2:18 remaining, and the Valiants pulled Cimorelli for an extra attacker in the final minute, but the Red Dragon defense held firm to secure the victory.
