Red Dragons Falter at #12 Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Cortland women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 defeat on the road at nationally 12th-ranked Williams on Sunday afternoon. Cortland sees its four-game winning streak come to an end and drops to 8-3-1 on the year, while Williams improves to 7-2.

Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) made eight saves in goal for the Red Dragons, with seven saves coming in the first half. Gianna Cirilla (Pattersonville/Schalmont) led Cortland with two shots on goal.

Maya Lloyd scored twice for Williams, and Lily Mark finished with a goal and two assists for the hosts. Chelsea Mohammed and Tessa Chomsky each recorded three saves to combine for the shutout, and Mohammed also provided an assist for the Ephs.

Williams came out firing quickly with six shot attempts in the opening seven minutes, including forcing Rouse into making four saves on those shots.

The Ephs broke through in the ninth minute, as a pass from the midfield by Mark slipped past the Cortland defense, and Lloyd was able to outrun everybody and slot a low shot underneath an onrushing Rouse.

Williams made it 2-0 in the 14th minute, as Mohammed lofted a long pass from her own end over the top to the Red Dragon backline to Lloyd, who dribbled around Rouse and fired a shot into the goal for her second tally of the game.

Goals by Bria Abbiati in the 24th minute and Lauren Rosenberg in the 40th minute extended the Williams lead to 4-0 at the end of the first half.

Mark netted her goal with a shot from distance that slipped past Rouse in the 56th minute to complete the scoring for the contest.

In the final 30 minutes, Cortland had a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal over Williams. However, the Red Dragons were unable to break up the shutout, as Piper Klammer (Mahopac), Samara Beauregard (Warwick/Warwick Valley), and Cirilla each had shots on goal that were saved by Chomsky.
