Red Dragons Wrap Up Regular Season With 1-1 Tie Against Nazareth

CORTLAND, NY – The Cortland women's soccer team finished the regular season with a 1-1 tie against Nazareth in non-conference action on Tuesday evening on Holloway Field. Cortland is now 11-3-3 ahead of its SUNYAC Semifinal matchup at home on Wednesday, Nov. 4, while Nazareth moves to 10-3-3 on the year.

Piper Klammer (Mahopac) netted her third goal of the season for the Red Dragons, while Leah Rehm (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) tallied an assist. Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) made two saves in goal for Cortland.

Guiliana Rodriguez netted Nazareth's goal, off of an assist from Shannon Sgombick. Golden Flyer goalkeeper Katriana Walls registered six saves in goal.

Klammer scored the opening goal just 4:42 into the first half. Rehm floated in a cross from a corner kick to the right post, where Klammer jumped and redirected a header that found its way into the bottom right corner of the goal.

In the 16th minute, Jillian Nicolosi (Farmingdale/St. Anthony's) made a strong defensive intervention in the midfield to tackle the ball away from Nazareth's Savanna Biehler and stop a promising attack. Just a minute later, Biehler cut around the Red Dragon defense towards goal, but just slid a shot way of the left post to keep the Cortland advantage at 1-0.

Neither team had a shot on target over the remainder of the half to give the Red Dragons the one-goal advantage into halftime.

Rouse made her first save of the game in the 49th minute to preserve the Cortland lead, coming off of her line well to block a shot attempt by Sgombick and deflect the shot away from goal.

Cortland was close to doubling its lead in the 58th, as Haley Loscalzo (East Northport/Commack) struck a long shot from outside the box that ricocheted off of the bottom of the crossbar and stayed out of goal. Dana Scruggs (Bethpage) had a follow-up attempt that was saved with a dive by Walls to keep Nazareth within a goal.

The Golden Flyers tied the game on a free kick play in the 61st minute after a foul was called on the Red Dragons on the edge of their 18-yard area. Nazareth set up a wall in front of the Cortland defensive wall and Sgombick quickly tapped a pass to Rodriguez, who curled a right-footed shot that squirted by Rouse and into the bottom right corner of the goal to tie the game.

Cortland had three shots on target saved in the final 30 minutes, two by Gianna Cirilla (Pattersonville/Schalmont) and another by Scruggs. Meanwhile, Rouse made one more save on a shot from distance by Sgombick, as neither team was able to find a winning goal in the final half-hour.
