CORTLAND, NY – Ten different Red Dragons registered a point in a dominant 7-0 win for the Cortland women's soccer team over Canton in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday evening on Holloway Field. Cortland improves to 8-2-1 (4-0-0 SUNYAC), while Canton falls to 2-9-2 (0-3-1 SUNYAC).
Gigi Piscopiello (Stony Point/North Rockland) scored the first two goals of her collegiate career, while
Gianna Cirilla (Pattersonville/Schalmont) also netted two goals for the Red Dragons.
Jordyn Chrysler (Voorheesville/Clayton A. Bouton) finished with a goal and an assist, while
Leah Rehm (East Syracuse/East Syracuse-Minoa) provided a pair of assists.
Tyla Vuotto (Lynbrook) scored for the fifth time in the last six games for Cortland, and
Avery Rich (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) netted her first goal of the year.
Samantha Ruffles (Danbury, CT) and
Melanie Rodriguez (White Plains) both tallied an assist for their first collegiate points, and
Jillian Nicolosi (Farmingdale/St. Anthony's) and
Piper Klammer (Mahopac) also assisted.
The Cortland defense did not allow a shot attempt in the game for Canton.
Olivia Rouse (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) supervised a scoreless first half, and
Breanna Hurley (Clarence Center/Clarence) and
Paige Markesich (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) each saw their first collegiate action in the second half.
Mackenzie Ryan made 13 saves in goal in a strong effort for the Roos.
Vuotto opened the scoring for Cortland just 7:20 into the contest. Nicolosi made a pass from down the right sideline toward the center of the 18-yard area, where Rehm expertly collected and made a cross to the center for a tap-in goal by Vuotto for the opener.
Cirilla made it 2-0 in the 13th minute, taking a cross from the right side from Rehm and then rifling a shot into the top left corner. Just three minutes later, Ryan made a stellar diving save to stop Vuotto from netting her second goal of the game in front.
In the 21st minute, Cirilla tallied her second goal of the game and team-leading ninth goal of the year. Klammer dribbled down the left sideline around a Canton defender and slid a pass to the middle of the box from near the endline. Cirilla was quickest to react, toeing a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Cortland held the 3-0 lead into halftime, with 15 shot attempts in the half and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. Canton's greatest opportunity of the contest came in the 35th minute, but Rich came across well to intercept a pass and clear the danger.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Rich scored to make it 4-0. An initial cross from a corner kick was blocked by the Canton defense back out to Rodriguez. The freshman whipped in another cross that flew over a pile of players in the center of the box to Rich at the left post, who tapped a right-footed attempt into the back of the net.
Piscopiello scored her first goal of the game in the 59th minute. Ruffles delivered a cross from a corner kick that landed right at the feet of Piscopiello, who sent a sliding shot into the right corner of the net for the goal.
Chrysler added her first goal of the year in the 72nd minute for a 6-0 lead. Ryan rushed out of her goal to stop a pass behind the Canton defense just outside of the penalty area, but her clearance fell right to the feet of Chrysler, who sent a first-time shot into the center of the empty goal.
Cortland capped the scoring with under three minutes left.
Gabby Skartsiaris (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) delivered a perfect through ball to Chrysler behind the Canton defense, but Ryan was able to make a lunging save on the initial shot attempt. Piscopiello was in the perfect position to collect finish off the rebound, firing a left-footed shot that found the back of the net for the final 7-0 margin.
