Power Play Clutch as Cortland Notches 3-2 Comeback Win Over #10 Oswego

CORTLAND, NY – Cortland scored two power-play goals in the third period to earn a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over nationally 10th-ranked Oswego in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's hockey contest on Friday evening in Alumni Arena. Cortland improves to 12-10-1 (9-6-1 SUNYAC) with its third straight win, while Oswego drops to 14-6-2 (11-4-0 SUNYAC) with its fourth consecutive defeat.

Thomas Rockey (Mullica Hill, NJ/Rochester Jr. Americans) and Conor Humphrey (Penfield/Rochester Jr. Americans) each netted a power-play goal for the Red Dragons, while Devlin O'Kane (Chicago, IL/New Jersey 87's) scored an even-strength goal for Cortland.

Nolan Suggs (White Lake, MI/El Paso Rhinos) made 28 saves in goal to earn his third straight win for the Red Dragons. Six different players added an assist in the win for Cortland.

Collin Vassallo and Brandon Cohen each scored a goal for the Lakers, while Michael Manzi made 26 saves in goal for Oswego. Cam Symons, Josh Simpson, and Ryan Burke each had an assist in the game.

The Lakers opened the scoring for the game just 4:55 into the first period, as Symons deflected a breakout pass by the Red Dragons to his teammate Vassallo in the neutral zone. Vassallo then stickhandled through a pair of Cortland defenders and slipped a backhand past Suggs for the opening goal.

The game remained 1-0 into the first intermission, with Cortland unable to take advantage of its one extra-man opportunity in the first period after an Oswego penalty for cross checking.

O'Kane scored his second goal of the season to equalize for Cortland 4:59 into the second period. Morley Phillips (Raleigh, NC/Amarillo Wranglers) carried the puck into the Cortland offensive zone and dropped a pass to Nate Boak (Canton/El Paso Rhinos). Boak quickly slid a pass to O'Kane in the left faceoff circle, who unleashed a one-timer into the top right corner of the net.

The tied game lasted just 12 seconds, as Cohen snapped a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net after a drop pass from Burke in the slot to re-establish Oswego's lead.

Each team had one power-play opportunity in the final four minutes of the second period, but the Lakers blocked a pair of Cortland shots and Manzi was able to turn aside one shot on the penalty kill. Meanwhile, Cortland blocked two Oswego shots and Suggs made four saves in the last two minutes of the period to keep the score 2-1 heading into the third period.

After a hooking penalty and a boarding penalty by the Lakers early in the third period, Cortland was able to take advantage of the 5-on-3 power play to tie the game at 2-2 with 12:26 left in the period. Rockey blasted a one-timer from the slot after a feed from Colby Seitz (Eden/Corpus Christi IceRays) from the goal line. Andrew Clouden (Hamburg/Seacoast Spartans) earned the secondary assist on the goal.

Cortland thought it had scored another goal seconds later when Phillips beat an onrushing Manzi to a loose puck behind the Oswego defense and chipped a shot into the corner of the net, but the referee disallowed the goal and sent Phillips to the penalty box for an elbowing penalty instead.

The Red Dragons were able to kill off the Oswego power play with one save by Suggs on the penalty kill, and went back on the power play shortly after following a tripping penalty by the Lakers, which Cortland capitalized on again for the game-winning goal.

On the power-play, Brady Hildreth (Lockport/New Jersey Titans) sent a pass from the left point to JC Humphreys (Canonsburg, PA/Rochester Jr. Americans) along the left side at the goal line. Humphreys slid a pass out front to Humphrey, who slipped a shot into the left corner of the net past Manzi and make it 3-2 with 7:11 remaining.

Oswego pressed for an equalizing goal, including pulling Manzi for an extra attacker with just over a minute remaining, but Suggs stopped six shots over the final four minutes of action to secure the victory.
