#16 Cortland Knocks Off #8 RPI, 17-10, in Season Opener

TROY, NY – Three different Red Dragons registered at least six points, and Charlie Falowski (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) made 18 saves in goal, as the nationally 16th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team knocked off nationally eighth-ranked RPI on the road by a 17-10 score on Wednesday afternoon. Cortland improves to 1-0 on the season, while RPI drops to 3-1 on the year.

Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) finished with six goals to lead Cortland, the second time in his career that he scored six times in a game after also having six goals in a win over Canton last season. Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) had a career-high seven points on three goals and four assists, while Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) registered his 100th career point, finishing with a goal and a career-high five assists.

Mason Carroll (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) finished with four goals, while Caden Morra (Farmingdale/Plainedge) had a goal and two assists. Dino Bowen (Yorktown) scooped up four ground balls and had two caused turnovers for Cortland. Falowski more than tripled his previous career high in saves which was five saves in wins over New Paltz and Plattsburgh last year, and recorded his third career victory in goal.

RPI was led by three goals from Cooper Manzi, while Tyler Ruffini and Easton Morse each had a goal and two assists. Jackson Massaroni and Sean Smith both scored twice for the Engineers.

The teams traded goals early, with RPI taking the early lead via a goal by Smith, but Swedlund immediately responded for Cortland from in front of the cage after a strong feed from behind the goal by Stoecker.

RPI once again netted a goal, Manzi's first of the game, but Carroll sprinted from the midfield line down the right side right to goal and snuck a shot past Sullivan to tie the game at 2-2. Swedlund added his second goal of the game from the top after a feed from the left by Stoecker with 6:28 left, giving Cortland a 3-2 lead.

After another goal by Manzi for the Engineers, Swedlund netted his third goal of the game with 1:29 left to give the Red Dragons a 4-3 lead after a quarter of action, cutting from behind the goal and depositing a shot into the corner of the net after taking a feed from Morra.

Drew Williamee (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) scored a man-up goal for his first collegiate goal for the Red Dragons early in the second quarter off a feed from Kavanagh, and then Swedlund scored again to extend the Cortland lead to 6-3, before the Engineers added back-to-back goals to pull back to within a goal.

Stoecker added his first goal of the game off a feed from Kavanagh for another man-up goal for the Red Dragons, Stoecker then found Carroll in front of cage for another goal two minutes later to re-establish a three-goal lead with 5:49 left in the half.

With Cortland leading 9-6 in the final minute of the half, RPI scored twice in the closing 44 seconds to reduce the deficit to 9-8 at the halfway point.

Cortland stormed out of halftime with four straight goals, two by Swedlund and one each from Carroll and Kavanagh, to re-gain momentum. After a man-up goal by RPI's Morse, Eli Volk (Alamo, CA/San Ramon Valley) netted his first goal of the year, and Stoecker tallied another man-up goal for the Red Dragons, assisted by Kavanagh, to give Cortland a 15-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

RPI netted a man-up goal to cut the Cortland lead to five with 9:13 remaining. However, the Cortland defense held firm and didn't allow another goal the rest of the way, with Falowski making eight saves in the final quarter to keep RPI at bay.

Carroll tallied his fourth goal of the game with 1:10 remaining, and Stoecker also completed his hat trick with 30 seconds left for the final 17-10 margin.
