ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Cortland baseball team swept a SUNYAC doubleheader versus New Paltz, winning the first game, 12-2 in seven innings, and pulling away late in a 6-3 win in the nightcap. The twinbill was played at Bard College.
Â
The teams will move to New Paltz for the final game of the weekend series Sunday at noon. Cortland improved to 12-7-1 overall and 5-0 in the SUNYAC with the victories. New Paltz is now 7-7 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Â
Cortland 12, New Paltz 2 (7 inn.)
Â
Warren Miller (Plattsburgh) and
Zack Zarrilli (Farmingdale) combined on a one-hitter in the opener, which was called after seven innings due to the SUNYAC's 10-run rule. Miller pitched four and two thirds innings and gave up one hit, four walks and two runs with eight strikeouts. He qualified for the victory since only four innings are required for a starting pitcher to be win-eligible in games that end after seven innings.
Â
Zarrilli entered with runners on first and third and one out in the bottom of the fifth and Cortland up 6-1. He walked two batters, the second of which forced in a run, but retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings. He did not, however, enter the game in an official save situation.
Â
Cortland finished the game with 11 hits.
Nolan Smith (Hamburg) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored and
Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored.
Tristan Gatchalian (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) was 2-for-5 with a double and
Anthony Carlo (North Bellmore/St. Anthony's) finished 1-for-2 with two walks and three RBI.
Trey McGowan (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) and
Jack McFerran (Selkirk/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) each drove in two runs.
Â
Matt Sarni recorded the lone hit for New Paltz with a two-out double in the third. Michael Weed started for the Hawks and gave up nine runs, eight earned, in five and a third innings.
Â
Cortland scored twice in the first on a Smith sacrifice fly and a Granger RBI groundout, and the Red Dragons added three in the third on a Carlo two-run single and a McFerran RBI single. Smith's RBI double in the fourth made it 6-0. New Paltz scored its two runs in the fifth without a hit as the Hawks capitalized on five walks.
Â
Cortland came back with six runs in the sixth to push its lead to 12-2. Gatchalian and Smith hit back-to-back one-out doubles, and later in the inning Carlo and McFerran drew consecutive bases-loaded walks.
Nick Vendola (White Plains) drove in a run with a fielder's choice forceout, and after he stole second McGowan followed with a two-run single.
Cortland 6, New Paltz 3
Â
Cortland took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a Gatchalian RBI single and a Carlo two-run single. New Paltz, however, twice drew back within a run. The Hawks scored in the first on a Ryan Muskopf RBI groundout and another in the second on a Luca Sieger RBI single to make it 3-2, and the teams each scored a run in the fifth - Cortland on a Smith RBI single and New Paltz on Sarni sacrifice fly.
Â
The game remained 4-3 until the eighth.
Lucas Granger (Horseheads) led off the inning with a single, stole second, was bunted to third by
Logan Karwowski (Clay/Cicero-North Syracuse) and scored on a McFerran two-out single. In the top of the ninth, McGowan led off with a walk, moved to second on
Reid Martin's (Dansville) sac bunt, went to third on a balk and scored on a Gatchalian sac fly.
Â
Ryan McLaughlin (Warwick/Warwick Valley) started for Cortland and gave up four hits and three runs in four-plus innings. He struck out four and walked one.
Dan Collins (Poughkeepsie/Spackenkill) entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fifth with Cortland up 4-2 and got out of the jam allowing just one run on the Sarni sac fly before inducing another flyout and striking out a batter. Collins went the rest of the way and earned the win - in five innings he gave up just two hits and no walks and struck out two, and he was not charged with any runs.
Â
Karwowski finished 2-for-2 and Carlo was 2-for-4 with two RBI as part of Cortland's nine-hit attack. Gatchalian drove in two runs and McGowan was 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored.
Â
For New Paltz, Joe Richetti finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Sarni was 1-for-2 with a walk, hit by pitch and RBI. Starter Kiran Paingankar allowed four runs in five innings for the loss. Dylan Hayes gave up one run on two hits over three innings out of the bullpen.
