Cortland Earns Runner-up Team Finish at Martin/Wallace Invitational

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The SUNY Cortland women's golf team finished in second place out of 10 teams at the Martin/Wallace Invitational, hosted by the Red Dragons Saturday and Sunday at the Cortland Country Club.
 
Cortland finished with a two-day score of 680 on the par-72 course. The Red Dragons posted a 344 on Saturday and a 336 on Sunday. Ithaca won the team title with a 642 (315-327). Union finished at 680 (342-338), but Cortland officially finished second over the Garnet Chargers based on a tiebreaker of comparing the scores of the fifth golfer on each team from each day. Rounding out the top five were St. Lawrence (350-355-705) and St. John Fisher (368-357-725).
 
Gina Milazzo (Greenwood Lake/Warwick Valley) led Cortland with a fifth-place finish out of 49 golfers with a score of 158. She posted a 78 on Saturday with a birdie and 11 pars and an 80 on Sunday with three birdies and five pars. Ithaca's Annelise Stencel was tournament medalist with a 153 (78-75), followed by Union's Iyene Essien in second with a 154 (80-74).
 
Mimi Rienzo (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg) finished in ninth place with a score of 167, highlighted by a career-best 80 on Sunday that featured three birdies and six pars. Kara Dumas (Jefferson/Gilboa-Conesville) tied for 13th place with a 175 (89-86), Steffi Trombley (Plattsburgh) tied for 20th with a 182 (90-92), and Pia Aguilar (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Highlands) finished 25th with a 189 (99-90).
 
Cortland is next scheduled to compete Sunday and Monday, April 19-20, at the Northeast Women's Golf Conference (NWGC) Championship at the Van Patten Golf Club in Clifton Park. The NWGC champion earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament. Cortland is the defending league champion and has won five of the last six conference crowns.
