Three Red Dragons Post Career-High Point Totals in 22-1 Rout of Canton

CANTON, NY – Five different Red Dragons finished with at five points or more, and three players recorded career-highs, as the Cortland women's lacrosse team earned a 22-1 victory on the road at Canton in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Wednesday evening. Cortland moves to 9-3 (5-0 SUNYAC), while Canton drops to 3-7 (1-5 SUNYAC).
 
Brooke Elizalde (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) and Kristen Javenes (North Rockland) each posted a career-high eight points in the game, with Elizalde scoring two goals and adding six assists and Javenes finishing with four goals and four assists. Emma Dempsey (Brewerton/Paul V. Moore) recorded a career-high seven points on four goals and three assists, while Sydney Elizalde (Ronkonkoma/Connetquot) and Ashley Melillo (Massapequa) chipped in four goals and an assist apiece. Melillo also added three caused turnovers and three ground balls, and Sydney Elizalde had two caused turnovers and five ground balls.
 
Rachel Rempe (Aquebogue/Riverhead) and Bridie McGuire (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) had five draw controls each, and Trinity Parks (Port Crane/Chenango Forks) made two saves and did not allow a goal over the first three quarters to earn the victory in net.
 
Sienna Hillicke scored the lone goal for the Roos, and Mikela Montes stopped five shots in the second half for Canton. Kate Whitley also finished with five caused turnovers and six ground balls.
 
Cortland needed just 1:10 of game action to open the scoring in the contest, with Dempsey scoring off of a feed from Javenes. The Red Dragons continued to pile on with five more goals to lead 6-0 before the midway point of the frame, two goals from Melillo, another goal by Dempsey, and one goal each by Sydney Elizalde and Brooke Elizalde.
 
Sydney Elizalde and Dempsey each tallied a goal in the final two minutes of the period to extend the Cortland lead to 8-0 after one quarter.
 
Cortland built its lead up to 14-0 at halftime, with two goals each from Javenes and Melillo and a goal each by Sydney Elizalde and Sierra Natoli (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) in the second frame. The Cortland defense also held Canton without a shot on goal during the second period.
 
The Red Dragons continued the strong defensive play in the third quarter with another frame preventing Canton from recording a shot on goal. Cortland also had five different players score a goal in the period to make it 19-0 – Chelsey Weber (Holtsville/Sachem East), Dempsey, Javenes, Brooke Elizalde, and Sydney Elizalde each registered a goal in the quarter.
 
Javenes added her fourth goal of the game with 9:21 left in the fourth quarter, and Chloe Kniskern (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) recorded her fourth goal of the season after an assist from Sydney Elizalde just minutes later. Cortland capped its scoring with a goal by Cali Brancato (Liverpool) with 5:19 remaining, Brancato's third goal of the season, to make it 22-0. Canton broke up the shutout bid with Hillicke's fifth goal of the year with 3:04 remaining, but Cortland's defense did not allow another shot attempt for the remainder of the game.
