The Cortland Softball program has announced the promotion of
Lainie Ornstein to the team's top assistant coach role for the upcoming 2026-27 school year.
Ornstein served as a volunteer assistant coach in 2025-26 and helped the Red Dragons win the SUNYAC title and tie for 17th nationally after going 2-2 in NCAA regional play.
A former standout player at Cortland from 2022-25, Ornstein played in 151 games, 149 as a starter, as an outfielder and catcher. She was a career .347 hitter with 144 hits and she ranks third in program history with 52 career steals and tied for ninth with 133 runs scored. As a senior she was named to the All-SUNYAC first team and was the SUNYAC Tournament Most Valuable Player while helping Cortland win the league title, and she received the team's Red Letter Award. Ornstein was a two-time selection to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team.
A native of Yorktown Heights, Ornstein graduated from Yorktown High School in 2021.
