Red Dragons Drop League Opener to Visiting Oswego, 5-2

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland women's tennis lost at home to Oswego, 5-2, in the SUNYAC opener for both teams.

Cortland (4-2, 0-1 SUNYAC) had a four-match winning streak snapped. The Red Dragons will host Oneonta in league play Saturday at 11 a.m.

Oswego (4-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) opened by winning all three doubles matches, including two close contests, to take a 1-0 team lead. Leah Bell and Emily DeLuca won 6-2 at first doubles, and at third doubles Avery Borman and Aubrey Salati clinched the team point with a 6-4 win over Anneli Adams (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Emma Morley (Bucnahan/Hendrick Hudson). Kate Hayes and Isabella Eason won 6-4 at second doubles over Reaghan Hughes (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and Alexandra Thut (Poughquag/Arlington) to complete the doubles sweep.

In singles action, Eason won 6-1, 6-3 on the fourth flight to put the Lakers up 2-0, but Christina Massoni (West Babylon) answered with a 6-2, 6-4 win at first singles to make it 2-1.

Oswego, however, won the next three completed singles matches. Bell was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at number two, and Salati scored the team-clinching point with a 7-5, 6-2 win at sixth singles. Hayes and Adams went three sets at fifth singles, with Hayes rallying for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Hughes outlasted DeLuca at third singles to finish the afternoon's action. Hughes won the first set, 6-4, and DeLuca answered with a 7-6 win in the second set, including a 10-8 tiebreaker. A super tiebreaker to 10 points was played to decide the match, and Hughes won that, 11-9.
