Cortland Rallies with Six-Run Eighth Inning to Defeat Plattsburgh, 14-10

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland scored six times in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally from a two-run deficit and the Red Dragons defeated visiting Plattsburgh, 14-10, in a SUNYAC baseball matchup. Cortland completed a three-game weekend sweep of the Cardinals to improve to 10-6-1 overall and 3-0 in the SUNYAC. Plattsburgh dropped to 9-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.

Cortland led 6-2 after two innings and 8-4 after five frames, but Plattsburgh came back to score three times in the sixth, twice in the seventh and once in the eighth to go up 10-8.

Cortland, however, sent 11 batters to the plate in its six-run bottom of the eighth. Trey McGowan (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) led off with a walk and, with one out, Tristan Gatchalian (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) singled to left. Nolan Smith (Hamburg) hit a sinking liner to center that turned into an RBI double to make it 10-9, and Lucas Granger (Horseheads) walked to load the bases.

Logan Karwowski (Clay/Cicero-North Syracuse) followed by hitting a hard grounder to first, but the throw home in an attempt to force out Gatchalian sailed high, allowing the tying run to score. Anthony Carlo (North Bellmore/St. Anthony's) gave Cortland the lead with a two-run double down the left field line, and two batters later Danny Jackson (Lagrangeville/Arlington) hit a two-run single up the middle.

Plattsburgh opened the game with two runs in the top of the first on a Colin Ross two-out, two-run double, but Cortland put up three runs in the bottom of the inning on a Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) one-out single, an error and a Smith three-run homer. Cortland's three runs in the second came on a Jack McFerran (Selkirk/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) leadoff homer, an error after an Elkins bunt single, and later in the inning a Granger sacrifice fly.

Frankie Kowal's two-run homer in the third drew Plattsburgh within 6-4, but Cortland notched a run in the bottom of the fourth when McGowan doubled, was bunted to third by Elkins and scored on a Gatchalian sac fly, and another run in the fifth without a hit as Carlo walked with one out, took second on a passed ball, eventually went to third after a couple of walks, and scored on a wild pitch.

Kowal's two-run single and a Ross bases-loaded hit by pitch cut Cortland's advantage to 8-7 in the sixth, and the Cardinals grabbed the lead with two in the seventh on RBI singles from Jonathan Beale and Jackson Pam. It appeared Plattsburgh was going to go up 10-8 in the inning, but a runner on third on a possible sac fly was called out for tagging too early. The Cardinals did make it 10-8 with a run in the eighth on a Ryan Hart RBI single.

Smith finished 3-for-4 with a homer, two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored to lead Cortland's offense. Gatchalian was 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and two runs, Elkins was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and McGowan reached base five times with a double, two walks and two hit by pitches. He scored three runs. In addition, Carlo was 1-for-4 with a double, walk, two RBI and two runs and Jackson went 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI.

Elkins started on the mound and allowed four runs in four innings. Tommy Lynch (West Seneca/Canisius), Cortland's third reliever entered with two runners on in the seventh. He pitched the final three innings and received the win despite allowing four hits and three walks with three strikeouts. He was officially charged with one run, and he struck out the final two batters with two runners on to end the game.

Plattsburgh outhit Cortland, 15-11, led by Kowal going 3-for-3 with a homer, double, three walks, four RBI and two runs. Beale was 3-for-4 with a double, walk and RBI and Hart went 3-for-5 with a double and RBI. Tyler Martin was 2-for-4 with a double, walk and two runs, Pam finished 2-for-5 with a walk, RBI and two runs, and Ross was 1-for-4 with a double, walk and three RBI.

Plattsburgh starter Kyan Zamaniyan allowed six runs, five earned, in an inning and two thirds. The Cardinals' third of four relievers, Ryan Loughlin, took the loss. He allowed four runs, three earned, in two and a third innings. Loughlin held Cortland scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings before being charged with the first four of Cortland's six runs in the eighth.

Cortland will host Clarkson in a non-league game Tuesday at 3 p.m.
