Cortland Drops Extra-Inning Decision to Clarkson

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Joe Figliolino singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and visiting Clarkson defeated Cortland, 4-3, in non-league baseball action.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-6 with the victory. Cortland dropped to 10-7-1. The Red Dragons are scheduled to play a three-game SUNYAC series at New Paltz this weekend - it appears the series will now be played at Bard College with two games on Saturday and one on Sunday. More info on the schedule will be announced this week.

Clarkson took a 3-0 lead off of Cortland starter Tyler Blake (Cortland) in the top of the first inning. Beau Vardion doubled in two runs with two outs, and two batters later CJ Cartier hit an RBI single.

Xander Payne (Medina) entered to pitch for Cortland after the Cartier single and retired the final batter with two runners on. He followed that with three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three batters. Joe Yovino (Levittown/Division Avenue) started the bottom of the fifth and kept Clarkson off the board for five innings before allowing the Golden Knights' run in the 10th. He gave up four hits and one run, struck out five and walked three.

Cortland scored twice in the bottom of the third to draw within 3-2. Danny Jackson (Lagrangeville/Arlington) and Trey McGowan (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) each were hit by a pitch and Talon Elkins (Syracuse/West Genesee) reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Tristan Gatchalian (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) followed with a grounder to short. Clarkson got a force out at second, with one run scoring, but the throw to first was wild to allow a second run to cross the plate.

Cortland had a chance to tie the game in the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs, but the runner from third was thrown out trying to score on a potential wild pitch when the ball rebounded off the backstop to the catch, who was able to tag the runner at the plate. The Red Dragons did tie the game in the fifth, however, on a Gatchalian walk, a Nolan Smith (Hamburg) single, a Lucas Granger (Horseheads) sac bunt and a Logan Karwowski (Clay/Cicero-North Syracuse) RBI groundout.

Cortland left runners on second and third in the sixth, and in the eighth the Red Dragons had a runner on first and two outs when Elkins lined a ball into left center. Clarkson left fielder David Harris, however, made a diving catch to keep the game tied. Clarkson also missed on some scoring chances in regulation as the Golden Knights stranded runners on third in the fourth and eighth innings.

Aidan Kuefner started off the top of the 10th for Clarkson with a double to left center, and he came around to score on Figliolino's single to center. Aaron Knuutila (Lockport) entered to pitch for Cortland and allowed a single, sac bunt and an intentional walk to load the bases, but he struck out the next two batters to end the inning. Cortland, however, was only able to get one runner on in the bottom of the 10th on a two-out hit by pitch.

Cameron Barbulean, Clarkson's fourth reliever, earned the win after pitching three hitless and scoreless innings. He struck out one and walked one. Ryan Petrie also was solid out of the bullpen for the Golden Knights, giving up no runs on three hits in the fifth through seventh innings. Clarkson starter Tommy DiFranco allowed one hit and no runs over the first two frames.

Figliolino and Cartier each went 2-for-4 with a walk and RBI and Vardion finished 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI for Clarkson. For Cortland, Elkins was 3-for-4 with a hit by pitch, McGowan ended 1-for-2 with two walks and a hit by pitch, and Granger finished 1-for-3 with a walk.
