MORRISVILLE, NY – The Cortland men's lacrosse team matched its second-largest goal output in program history in a 34-8 victory over Morrisville to clinch the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular-season title on Wednesday evening.
The Red Dragons scored 34 goals for the second time this season, one shy of matching the program record set in a victory over Oneonta in 1983.
Sean Kavanagh (North Canton, OH/Hoover) finished with nine points on two goals and seven assists, while
Nick Stoecker (East Setauket/Ward Melville) had six goals and two assists and
Stefan Swedlund (Randolph, NJ) scored six goals.
Mason Carroll (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa),
Nathan Nagengast (Bay Shore),
Drew Williamee (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy),
James Devine (Haverstraw/North Rockland), and
Sean Olvany (Canandaigua/Canandaigua Academy) each tallied two goals, and
Colton Hornquist (Eden) had a goal and three assists.
Matthew Siener (Lakeview/Frontier) had a team-high two caused turnovers, while
Chad Bowen (Yorktown) won 14-of-15 faceoffs and
Nicky Miltenberger (Ridge/Longwood) won 11-of-15 faceoffs.
Kyah Dohn led Morrisville with three goals, while Noah Taylor added two goals and three assists and Jason Tedeschi had two goals and an assist.
Cortland rattled off seven straight goals to begin the contest, with Stoecker scoring three times, Swedlund adding a pair of goals, and Kavanagh and Nagengast each scoring once. Kavanagh also added three assists during the run.
Taylor got Morrisville on the board just before the midway point of the period, but Cortland continued to add to its lead with two more goals by Swedlund and another by Stoecker. Following back-to-back goals by the Mustangs, Nagengast and Swedlund each scored a goal in the final 14 seconds of the period to give Cortland a 12-3 lead after one quarter.
The Red Dragons outscored the Mustangs by a 12-1 margin in the second quarter, including 10 straight goals to close the half, to put the contest out of reach by halftime.
Cortland added four more goals in the third quarter, one each scored by
AJ Surian (Bay Shore),
Michael Restino (Allentown/Allentown Central Catholic), Olvany, and Devine, to stretch its advantage to 28-5 heading into the final quarter.
The Red Dragons finished off the dominant performance with six more goals by six different players in the fourth quarter.
Jack LaBarbera (Lynbrook) tallied his first collegiate goal, while
Michael Rickard (Paramus, NJ),
Carmen Orton (Rome/Rome Free Academy),
Jacob Miller (Binghamton/Blue Ridge),
Steven Baranoski (Floral Park/Floral Park Memorial), and
Brayden Black (East Islip) each also registered a goal.
Cortland wraps up the regular season on Saturday at home against Plattsburgh, and as the top seed in the conference tournament, will host the fourth seed in the SUNYAC semifinals on Wednesday on Grady Field.
